HI.

I'll post updates here about this "small" project.

I haven't been particually a part of building it, but I can share some progress made.
This is a build for a client, mainly built by a friend of mine, at my (rented)garage.

This is from the start.

It had a BOB swapped in it. This was the first year he got to drive it. It was done on some kind of budget, so engine wasn't gone over or anything. Long story short, engine seized :thd:
Well it worked, until it didn't. Overall the car had minor issues during the year, snapped cluth cable, g.box swapped, heads changed iirc.
I was the one to change his clutch cable. The car had its original pedals and there was a Sierra clutch cable installed. If anyone knows how a Taunus pedal looks like, then you know a Sierra cable won't fit. Well it does, if you weld a Taunus cable end on it.  ;D but hey, it worked, so thats what i replaced it with.
Also while working on it, noticed really dodgy wiring and steering column wasn't fixed properly.

So start of this year, we got a 2 post lift installed at my place and started the work on this.

Jaanus

Well first thing, got the BOB out with everything.
Then on to  testfit the new powerplant. The 3,7L v6  out of a Mustang.

Tight fit, main problem being, engine sits on the steering rack and subframe and the hood won't close.
One requierment for this build is, that the hood must stay like that. NO Scoops.
well crap :D

Jaanus

In comes the donor car.

A NA MX-5, same client had sitting around, rusting.

This has a subframe with better design, and overall track width is just about the same as Taunus.
Also positively will get possibly better handling than the original stuff from the '70-s.

Since then(that was end of January), the Taunus sits on its new wheels. I've not taken pics of how excactly, sry.

Jaanus

Engine mounts are done. The front subframe was also modified for extra clearances.

Ebay headers from US. Cheap ones, so they can be modified if necessary.

Also half the bulkhead is gone for modifiyng, floor is gone, it was rotten anyway. One corner has been remade, seen on the first pic.

Still needs some clearencing of the subframe for the exhaust to run through there.

Also, going to be fitted is a pedalbox from OBP.

Jaanus

This just about it for now.

My friend who builds this, also has a Youtube channel:
2 parts are up so far, more on the way.

I'll try and keep this thread updated with pics and info.

Going for a more modern frontend is indeed a step forwards compared to the Taunus setup. The rear sump oil of the mustang pan also makes it easier.

I love the build.

Why not grab a electric power steering pump and hide it under the fender?

As a added bonus. Its capable to be used on a Hydro-boost brake booster witch is very small so it will save you some space in the engine bay.

Tbh, i don't know, i don't get to decide that.

For the brakes, there will be a pedalbox.

It was just me brainstorming again.

time for an update
no new videos sadly.

dug out some older photos:

making of a new floor

engine bay

dont remember exactly, but i guess it was 3x10cm the 2 beams under the floors
a little side piece added to it for jacking

now fast forward couple of months
shifter and handbrake

Jaanus

universal heater box

ecu and pdm mount and heater goes in the hole top left

and now onto the fun stuff

switched to VAG coils, suit quite nice

Jaanus

fuel rail modded, added a return and moved inlet also to one end

fpr added(cheap chinese for now)

pedalbox & plumbing

and the exhaust

polished up

only one backbox, literally no room under the floor or in the tunnel next to the massive 3 inch prop

Jaanus

i can leave this here now

didn't check if there was a gasket when installing  ;D  thats why it went to the limiter with throttle closed

a lot of work still to be done

2011 mustang, same as engine/trans. bolts onto the trans, part cut out to get to length, adaptor at the back to bolt on to the taunus diff.
