More and more peeps are finding there engines are getting fooked after having parts Blast cleaned, this has mainly been on 24V Plenums and cam covers but could have the same results on any engine.

So be WARNED

This came out of cam covers that had been cleaned through several times before fitting, ended up in the sump and went through the oil pump destroying it

All engine parts that need cleaning internally like plenums etc should be blasted with the media which is very fine crushed walnut shells. Used in the states a lot but hardly anyone over here has heard of this blasting media. If any particles are left inside the engine they do no damage and get collected in the oil filter quite safely.

Hmmm, blasted my shell with iron grit (100kg jblast @75 cfm  ) with the engine in and have been wondering if any has found its way into the intake. I still see a bit in the shower tray every morning after 2 weeks and its still on the cotton buds i clean my ears with


btw - engine concerned is the cologne thats coming out, not the blueprinted Lotus

anyway, you don't grit/shotblast engine parts do you? Chemical hotwashing innit?

I've started powder coating plenums and cam covers and was shocked at how much crap had got in the plenum.  It took several hours of flushing with a hosepipe before I was happy the sand had been rinsed out fully.  I'm making some blanking plates to seal the plenums in future.

excellent info and just in time, i've stripped mine for cleaning this weekend, blanks for the plenum is a top idea, i'll make some up my self.

I looked into walnut shells for health/enviromental reasons,as I prefer not to breathe in the mainstream media.  I did get some,forgot I had it

You could use salt as a blasting media.

I had both my 12v and 24v pleniums and rocker covers done.  I usually clean my engine parts with Mr Muscle oven cleaner cos it gets rid of all the grease and oil.  I was suprised with how much crap came out of the pleniums, then sprayed loads of alloy wheel cleaner in them.  That rinsed out the rest.  Then painted them all.  Powder coated the 12v but the red powdercoat went brown over time.
