An engine builder told me that if a brand new engine sits around for years and years unused, its scrap... is this at all true? I'm considering buying an engine that came from a main dealer but has never been unpacked from the pallet. Can't see the seller letting me take it to bits to check it really.
Not sure if a "seasoned" veteran of 66K would be a safer option? its a lot less of a gamble money wise. I just like the idea of a virgin engine, never been in a car, but who wouldn't? opinions please ;)

If its a brand new BOA engine that never run, its sitting there for 20 years.

I would buy it, but I would take it apart and check / chance the bearings, gaskets, seals and hoses and put it back together.

Its an AJ30 Paul, but the later type with revised intake, seen in XF, X350 and S-type from around 2003 onwards. I just rang to say yes i'll have it but someone else has arranged a mechanic to check its correct for his car and the seller has given him first refusal till 11am tomorrow....  :roll eyes: you snooze you lose! Cheers

QuoteIts an AJ30 Paul,

Ok its sitting for 11 max years.  ;D I still would check / chance the bearings (just for a piece of mind), gaskets, seals and hoses and put it back together and give it a good oil prime before starting it. But that's me. If it never had run, you could prime it with oil and run it.

Well I bought a used complete engine and manual box with everything  - loom, ecu, exhaust manifolds, mounts, gearbox cross member, ancillaries, flywheel clutch all for £300 off an old local fella who bought it for a project he hasn't time for now. Its all done 80k and the seller checked it out properly when he bought it, saw it run etc said its all good. I'm to fetch it all in the morning.

I had been watching another one that was complete except for flywheel and air-con and steering pumps but clean as new and only 66k for £199 delivered on a pallet from scotland, so i bought that too. I may sell one later but at that price, i thought a spare would be cool... its like 80p /hp

edit - maybe i could weld them together ;D
