Heres my current project, I was given a mechanically sound 2.9 Xr4x4 that had been in a rear end shunt and intended to get it repaired, trouble was it would have been far more expensive to fix than  buying an undamaged one.

I did think about a reshell as i could have bought a basic model quite cheap, but i know how much work a reshell is and i knew i would get bored half way through if it was just gonna end up as a "normal" car.

Hit upon the idea of using a P100, and wanting to keep the 4x4 meant i would need to get a rear diff ratio to match the front, and as i thought about it i realised to fit rear discs, and LSD and the new ring gear and pinion i would have spent enough to buy ANOTHER XR 4x4.

So i decided to fit the rear beam from the XR as well, this would also allow me to fit the ABS on the truck without much bother which will help with the much lighter rear end (i hope)

anyway, heres a load of pics of the project as it has gone on so far.

This is the lucky truck, about £300 with tax and test and no rot apart from on the pick up bed. (along with a large dent)

i hate wasting time doing stuff wrong.

Fairly pleased with myself at getting this lardy bastard back in on my own.

having a bit of a pain in the butt day today, noticed the P100's tank is weeping slightly round one of the seams, so i thought i best remove it.

was a bit akward as i found out where all the siezed up and rounded of bolts were on the truck now!!

couldnt really get the grinder out either as it has 30 quids worth of juice in it and i have nowhere to store that much petrol, i was VERY carefull with my hacksaw and had 3 fire extinguishers standing by.

so now im gonna fit the sierra's rear beam and see if i can find a space to mount the XR's tank, which solves the problem of mounting a fuel pump and surge tank, and it means my fuel gauge will read right and i'll still have a low fuel warning light.

Its not gonna fit at the front though as its too high to go under the bed when it goes back on, so i dunno quite how i'm going to route the filler hose, ahh problems problems.

looks like it may be fairly easy to get the rear beam mounted though as the two front mounts line up with the chassis and so do the springs

bit hard to see from the pics but the beam mounts and springs are nicely inline with the chassis rails which is gonna make life a bit easier, looks a bit out in pics but thats only cos its hanging crooked on its bit of rope.

Looks like a cool project. As mentioned, it is a bit of a job for a driveway.  I'll be interested in more progress pics when you get a chance to get back to it.

woah! that's awsome. i'd love to get one of those over here and do the same thing using the 2.3 turbo stuff.

HOW YA GETTIN ON WITH IT POPUP

had a lay off for the winter, weather is clearing up enough now and im gonna get back to it soon.

plans have changed now, as i bought another XR4x4 cheap with a destroyed gearbox for winter use, i nicked the gearbox and stuff out the truck to keep me mobile over the winter.

while i was looking for another 4x4 box along with a clutch etc i "accidently" bought a 2wd saph cossie with AVO adjustable suspension all round but no engine and box and a alloy 5 litre ohc Mercedes V8.

so the truck is now having the cossie running gear installed along with the merc engine mounted on the back.

Its gonna be mid engined with a 3 foot longer wheelbase and upright stack exhausts, just waiting for a long enough gap in me work to get the suspension on it so i can move it to a workshop where the engine is being fitted, was hoping to have it all mounted by now, but have been busy with working.

the P100 will live soon!!
