xr4man

hello from my side of the pond.

i thought you all would like to see my latest acquisition and project. this one is going to go slow due to the raritu of parts over here. but here are the initial rebuild pictures. it looks worse than it is. i just need to get some seats, a few coolant hoses, a radiator and put the dash back in. then eventually i will have the engine rebuilt.

Owain

i like that a lot, it'll look as stunning as your xr4 soon im sure, you got any pics of your whole collection of cars that you have at the moment as you seem to have a fair few

xr4man

here's the link to my black '88 merkur

you just saw my red car and of course the cossie here. the daily driver is a blue 2005 toyota tacoma. nothing special there, bone stock standard cab, 5 speed, 4 cyl.

Cossy power   , where ya find that one, bet ya chuffed to bits.

i bought it from erik. i think that after it was stolen, he just wasn't able to really get back into it. he's still got a cossie motor that is over on your side being built up. don't know what it's gonna go in yet but it will be a monster.

also, i need a cap for the power steering reservoir and the header tank. anyone know where i can get them, are they the same on base sierras? if so, anyone have spares they wanna throw in the post for me?

xr4man

i have a header tank cap on the way, i just need a power steering reservoir cap now.

capri v8 driver

i think, you can use a power steering reservoir cap from a other mercury, most are using the same cap.

thanks for the tip. i'll try and find something from a  mercury then.

xr4man

ok, made it up to the batcave this weekend. i only had a couple minutes so there's not a huge progress report. but, i did find a hose to go from the header tank to the lower tube on the radiator. and since i got the black leather scorpio seats for the red xr, i pulled the corolla seats out and installed them in the cossie. i also brought the carbon hood home so i can grind the holes to mount the vents and brought the front bumper home so i can install all the lights. so, without any more hesitation, here are the pics with the seats.

xr4man

so last night i got the vents mounted in the hood. the screws were too long so i have to find shorter ones, but here it is

xr4man

not much done as far as trim pieces,  but i did get her fired up after 2 years of not being started.

pmsl taps, just call the firebrigade out with the simon ladder and i'll gladly give ya a hand. I was under the impression that with handbrake travel like that it'd either snapped the cable or it was never connected, bes invest in an anchor loll

xr4man

we'll check out brakes and cables next time i get up to work on it. with the car 4 hours away from me, i can't get to to it too often. this trip was to make it run, the next it will move.

xr4man

so i went up staurday nd swapped wheels. ended up the stock merkur rims were wedged against the calipers. put the red saab steelies from my black car on and was able to actually drive it. of course only 6" either way cuz it's inside the garage, but it still moved under it's own power. will set up a date to get it hauled down to maryland soon.

xr4man

looks like november 17th is the magic day to bring her home.

xr4man

pictures from yesterday. my new baby is finally home.

some underside pics

the new tires

the first "repair" and also the first saab part lol. saab uses the same bosch bpv as the cossie. however the new ones have brass internals so as not to self destruct like the older style ones.

pressure washing the floor after pressure washing the underside of the cos

much cleaner underside

and the new dash installed this evening

Bet your well chuffed now its home m8

xr4man

you betcha!!

we spent about 2 hours just looking at it when we drove it in the shop. then pressure washed and spent another 2 hours looking at it. then i got the itch to do something since i was only 15 minutes from home and not 4 hours, so i decided to replace the dash with a  good one.and tonight after i pay a few bills i'll probably roll up there and finish up the dash and a few other interior parts.

xr4man

driver door card installed

upper dash installed

tail lights installed

today i finished installing the front bumper. got all the plastic mounting pieces in place and some rust prevention done.

i also finished mounting the wing.

i also installed some leds in the instrument cluster.

xr4man

almost had a catastrophic failure today. i decided to make some measurements to see why the right front wheel was sitting 1/2" further forward than the left. the only discrepancy i could find was from the back of the wheel well to the ball joint. after more looking i found that the u-bracket holding the sway bar bushing on the right side was not flush with the frame rail. so i took the sway bar loose and found that the frame rail was pulled forward where the bolts went through to the captured nuts inside. i grabbed the air hammer and did a little prayer. i was able to pound the frame rail back into form. however, the top captured nut broke off.

luckily there is a small slot in the inboard side of the frame rail and we were able to fish out the nut with a magnet. so, how the hell do we get it welded back in? well we wrapped a piece of wire around the nut and fished it through the hole and pulled the wire through the bolt hole. we drilled two holes previously where the edges of the nut would be. then i welded the nut through teh small drilled holes and reassembled the sway bar brackets. took another measurement and found the the previously mentioned discrepancy was now gone. both sides are exactly 16 3/4" from the back of the wheel well.

so, a potential disaster was diverted and i was able to fix the alignment problem.

it ended up to be a good day after all.

sorry no pics, i forgot the camera.

oh, i also learned that the subframe is exactly the same between the cossie and the merkur.
