This is what I started with a 1992 2.0 EFI that didn't like going up hills

What's up with the box Andy?

andykay

Box is a bit dodgy as it used to be in a Bristol    and he altered the gear linkage and a few other bits, it runs okay but not how I want it. 1st to 2nd gear is at 20mph 2nd to 3rd is 50mph 3rd to 4th about 90 and there is nothing in between so you have to drive b@lls out all the time    which is fun but not always what I want.

Andy.

tiff

nice, rare accessory alloys too

looks cool m8 are the wheels mk2 granada ones ,shure look like em ,,

Tony

andykay

now let me get this correct, 1st 2nd and 3rd are ok but ya need to rev the shite to get it to 4th,, yes?

ha
if so,, check the electrical kickdown is working ok,(sounds like its in kick down all the time) and vss (or incorrect vss delays top gear change),,, one of them aint right,,,

also have you connected the vac pipe from the plenum (rear) to the gearbox?

tony

That'll surprise a few people, bet you're glad you got it back.   I didn't realise a transit had such a short engine bay. Still it all fits in there.

Once you've sorted out any gremlins I'm sure you'll get to enjoy it:)

No the wheels are what Ford fitted to German mk2 Transit Doormobiles so have the correct 160 PCD, took me ages to find them just not sure I like them

I get 4th at about 90    Its had a new VSS, vac tested and okay put a new loom on gearbox, just got a new kickdown relay so going to sort it out shortly but I have received my new torque converter from the states and I have another engine to rebuild so may do it all in one go as I have some other bits as well as some of Chuck W's engine mounts to fit

It suprises me now and again when I forget its not the diesel LWB I am in and gun the accelerator    It only needs the bulkhead knocking in a few inches to make it fit but it is a little tight lenth ways.
Just fitted BOB cams and vectra injectors plus a few shiny bits to tidy the bay up.

2 things

1/ if the vss isnt matched with the dif ratio the ecu thinks its not going fast enough to change gear, holds it in gear longer,,, could be ya problem,, remember the ecu controls 4th gear ONLY,,  its that that the kicksown switch controls, its the ecu that changes it to 4th gear,

2/ disconect kick down on the plug by throttle body, aslo remove the relay and test,, if its the same it IS the above,,trust me,,

i have had the same problem, on my xr4i, youl find you dont want the 24v vss more like the 2.0 scorp auto vss,,,
what is your dif ratio?????????????

Cheers Tony, never thought about matching the vss to the diff, I was going to put a 3.91 diff on but I liked it as it was so left the 4.56 on it   I am going to be doing a few jobs this week so I will try the kick down disconected and the new relay and see what occurs. Is the 2.0 vss a straight swap ?
Goes like $hit off a shiney shovel but with no 4th it cooks the ATF after 50 or so miles

you dont need to disconnect the kick down now, you have answerd it,, you have a miss match on the dif/;vss thats all...

i think youl need to look at any car/tranny what has the same dif ratio you have, might find the manual are the same fitting.
not sure myself.

i also added a huge 24row oil cooler and stat for the autobox,, never goes above 95 degrees,, box's start to cook at 130 and it halfs there life or less
you need to sort that mate or youl be looking for another box

The tranny vss is totally different I will see if I can find something closer or see if I can find a drive gear with less teeth on than what mine has.

I have a 13 row cooler on at the moment but this mesa cooler and thermostat is going to be fitted this week if it stops raining long enough.

i just talked with jurgen (cossiemk2) he assures me the vss is the same its the gear on the shaft thats needing changing,,
edit....
jurgen just threw this at me,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

tranny has loads of vss gears, more than the scorpy/granny but we couldnt find a perfect match but close enough would be the 21 tooth gear,,

i bet you have the granny one (18 teeth) thats why its like it is..

tony

Yeah that VVS looks the same as the two I have on my mt75 hydrid. Probably the worm gear that are different.

Andy do you know what colour the VVS worm gear drive is? Mine is red, I`ve got a spare in the workshop somewhere I`ll hunt it out and post a pic then you`ve got something to compare it to.

andykay

Here you are this is mine and you are correct only 18 teeth

nearly got thrown out the last time for loosing my temper so it could be fun.

Andy.

RS2KPete

that looks like fun Andy hope you get it sorted

Cheers Pete, it can really be fun especially as the accelerator and brake are on hand controls so steering is nearly all one handed    Nearly all sorted just a few more jobs then I can get on with rebuilding this spare motor I have then its engine change time again

Andy.

This should do the trick then Tony its off a 1963-66 Mustang

Cheers, done by a firm called aerocoat, they only use a chemical cleaning process so it doesn't run the risk of filling the motor with shot blast trapped in the plenum, very cheap too.

Andy.

andykay

Just a few pics with the new radiators and fans on and the chrome work

Very nice engine bay Andy
I`m very tempted to do a engine swap on my mk4 recovery truck, the 2.5DI is getting abit tired as its on 164k........struggles abit now when its loaded up.

andykay

Still needs the wiring sorting but its getting there slowly. I get more MPG from this than I do my diesel 2.5 TD

Andy.

Mikey J

Looks really spanking to me but I'd like to see those header tank hoses tidied up   You must be well pleased.

Dave2302

Very Nice Andy,

I remember back when I was 19 (wee while ago now  ) we used Mk 1 Trannys to tow the Race Car, kept blowing up 2.0 V4's, so we fitted the diesel front panel and a 3.0 litre essex V6.  Terrific bit of kit in them days.

Good on yer,

Regards Dave
