So on Monday night I picked up my project car. Bought from Tom (Doughnutter). It was a G plated 2000e, but when Tom bought it it already had gone through a 24v transplant, Tom has kept his engine and having back all of the running gear so that i can put all my stuff from my old 4i 24v

So here it is when I first got it

Tuesday nite I started stripping the interior

Before

After

Plan was to keep the loom that is in the car but after looking at the mess of wires in the passenger footwell I've decided mine is a lot simpler and tidier

Wednesday involved more striping last nite, first thing was to remove this spaghetti of wires

Much better

After all that I couldn't really be bothered with much else so just took the roof lining out and seatbelts etc and cleared everyhting out of the scuttle panel

Going well so far..

Tonite I've done little jobs, first off I took a trip to the tip to get rid of the e34 touring bootfull of crap that I had already stripped from the interior and under the bonnet, whenI got back I cleared the engine bay of all the bits left bolted down ready for a good degreasing.

I also got rid of the door cards, seirra owners out there any tips for getting rid of the horrible black stuff that sticks the foam shite onto the door? I gave up and left it on my old one but want this one looking nice and clean..

Other than that I removed some speaker wiring and the wiring in the boot for the solenoid boot release.

On the weekend I tackle the sound deadening, luckily I still have the heat gun I borrowed off the in laws to remove it last time, best give it back once I'm done

Once thats done I will remove the rear sub frame and front cross member and all its attached bits to give them back to their owner.

Leebay

Nice, looks like a good solid project.

Know what you mean about that black tacky stuff, try scraping most of it off and wiping the rest with a rag with abit of petrol on.

Remko GT

I took most of that black crud of with a lot of patience. (and my hands obviously   )
Making it cold makes it easier to take off.

the urge to heat it up with the gun really makes it worse doesn't it.

time and thinners.

if your stripping it, i want a fuel computer out of a 2000e mate?

Sorry ian tom has promised me it

That the guy whos shell it was before welsh mart's

Nice to see the car not full of rubbish too last time i saw it was on toms drive an you could not move in it lol

Doughnutter

Nice project Mart, look forward to seeing it finished and out drifting in competitions    Glad its gone to a good home, was one project too many for me    At least I got a spare engine loom etc, considered selling it but I think i'll keep it now. Get it rebuilt / checked over and keep it spare or maybee put it in the hatch depending on what happens.

Mads your fuel comp thingy is sat on the kitchen table awaiting collection, along with all the other stuff you want

Bum!!

i needs some BOB cams to compensate Madz....

WelshMart

Today I've stripped off all the sound deadening, I'm glad that I still had the heat gun as it all lifted of nice and easy

After I had bagged it all up I started working on removing all the residue left over, thanks to Toms tip I used petrol and a paint brush then wiped it of and it all just lifted off.

Before

After

Now the interior is nice and clean after a wash down with the hose, means that I can start attacking the few rust patches and install my roll cage then paint up inside

#8
More stripping on Sunday, as I'm using all my old stuff I'm giving the front cross member and rear subframe back to Tom

So now everything is stripped it time to start rebuilding, first on the list is to break out the trusty welder, there's a patch on the passenger side of the transmition tunnel that needs patching and this inner sill to floor have atarted to go in a few places inside, I've also got a few unwanted holes in the bulk head that the BDC reg require me to block up....

WelshMart

Sorry for the lack of updates recently but the weather has been crap in derby and progress has been slow.

Managed to get some stuff done most of last week involved cleaning the engine bay, btw cheap ass washing up liquid is great for cleaning off all the grime and oil in the engine bay, I also managed to prep the rusty areas, mainly by chopping out the big pieces and treating the smaller patches with rust treatment.

On the weekend I got the welder out:

Patched the inner sills where they had started to rust away

Also the passenger side rear outer seat mount needed some work

The transmittion tunnel on the passenger side had rusted through
I patched this underneath with 3mm plate where it had gone through the double skin and it was near the gearbox mount then dressed it inside. Debating if I should drill some hole anf plug weld them together, but doubt it'll really add strength.

Also cout out the old handbrake mount to make a nice flat section to mount the hydro, used 3mm plate again to make it nice and strong

As I'm not gonna be running heaters in the car  I had some holes in the bulkhead to patch some fire cant get through them

Then I got bored of welding, I've decided to try and save weight at the front I'm gonna make a box section front end which will have a removeable part to aid installing and removing the engine and also have a radiator protector built in to save me from those nasty cones so I took the angle grinder to it.....

Weather was shite on Monday nite but I got home from work today and the sun was out so I set about making a rear firewall so that I can install a boot mounted fuel tank, I ended up with this before it poured down

Dont be too harsh with my welding skills I know they aint great but I still got my L plates and trust me the inner sills in the sierra are like paper, I'm getting better I think...

WelshMart

Right another update for you, things are still going slow what with the Derby weather recently and the need to use power tools outdoors but work is carrying on when I get chance out there.

In the last couple of weeks I have cut out the spare wheel well and welded in a sheet to cover the hole and give me somewhere to mount my new shiny fuel cell

I have sprayed the boot black, well most of it the rest I couldn't do without getting gassed

I have cut the structure out of the boot to save some more weight

and I have put bonnet pins on the boot to make it accessable without a key as the rules of BDC state

I have also fixed the drivers side electric window which had come off its runners and I have cut out the sunroof and replaced it with a sheet of metal

Tonight I started to construct the box section front end that i am making but rain stopped play after I had tacked the uprights in and the new headlamp suround on one side in so hopefully a drier night tomorrow for me to finish that.

WelshMart

Finally I get a dry nite to break the welder out properly, so I set about making the box section front end

Some pictures of my welds, camera kept wanting to focus on other things though.

And here is the finished article

And doing what its made to do

Protecting the radiator which is in a fragile place, I'm happy with it and it looks pretty tidy too  :D

WelshMart

I've had another hard evenings work, the pull cables are mounted

the bonnet is pinned

and the big holes in the rear shelf are covered

Here's the trailer full of scrap metal that I have cut out of the shell

That means that most of the welding is done, leaving me now with some tidying up to do, painting the interior, painting the engine bay, refitting the loom and dash etc.

Hopefully in the next few weeks I should start seeing it all coming back together and looking less and less like a bare shell on my drive and more like a car again.  :D

WelshMart

Cheers.

Had another busy day today, wanted to get all the bare metal painted so that I can be happy to leave it for a week while I take a well deserved holiday.

First thing this morning I got to work with a pressure washer to wash off all the muck that had been left over, very successful all th shite was removed.

Left that to dry in the sun while I got on with some other jobs (pressure washing the patio to keep the missus happy, lol). Then I rubbed down the engine bay and gave it a nice new coating of Tetrosyl White, now it looks freaky fresh  :D

Once that was done i decided that there was enough time left in the day to crack on with the interior, so that got rubbed down, the windows got masked and the Tetrosyl Black cake out, three tins later and my thumbs are very sore but the interior looks good

The rear half

and the roof

I will admit the interior isn't completed as I run out of paint, I still have the footwells and the doors to do but all of the new metal is now coated.

I also spent a few hours scrapping the black shite that Ford decided to stick the foam onto the doors with, a lot of it is off but there is still a lot to come.

Anyway I can leave the car for a week now to go and relax on my hols, more updates when I'm back.

Mik

Looks like its coming along nicely. You should get it weighed once its done to get a final weight. Are you gonna cage it?

Think you could do with some swage lines or bracing in the rear firewall, that thing will deafen you.

Mik.

I will definately try and get it weighed when its done. I have a cage sat in the shed waiting to go in.

The car itself will probably deafen anyway, It'll only be used on the track and driven in spurts not continuously so the rear firwall will stay as it is but a good point you raised.

WelshMart

Last weekend my dad brough me back my gearbox with fresh new synchro's and new oil seals, so whilst I had his time i got him to help me put the engine back in and get it running, however he put his fat ass through me screen and now owes me a Sierra heated front screen

Engine in place

the gearbox is also in place

The diff mount got killed after I polybushed the rear subframe so there was no way I was paying £100odd for a polybushed diff mount so this week I knocked up a solid one

with a coating of paint

mounted on the car

If anyone is interested in a Sierra solid diff mount they are for sale at £30 each, for track use only

Spent the afternoon re-assembling the rear subframe as I had dismantled it for storing and put it on the car along with the rear shock and springs, which I removed another coil from the back before fitting them

Finally its a car and its on the floor but no way low enough, think it needs about 2/3 coils off the front and 1/2 coils of the rear

Feels like the car has really progressed in the last two weeks btu work will be slow as I am moving house in 3weeks time.

Left to do:-

Run new brake lines
Fit dash, wire in new gauges and switches
Fit headlights and sort out their earth points
Fit rear section of prop
Clutch cable and throttle cable
Fit wipers
Weld in roll cage
Build new exhaust
Run new fuel lines

I was hoping to get this done by the begining of December but with me now moving house I'm hoping to get it done by Christmas

3drpete

WAT MOVE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!

YA CANT!! I WONT BE ABLE TO KEEP DRIVING PASSED SNEAKALY TO SEE HOW YA GETTING ON WITH IT LOL

WelshMart

Lol, you been watching me?? Even more reason to move!! Lol You should knock on the door next time you drive passed see if I'm in..

3drpete

WelshMart

3drpete

yeah im good mates with him for my sins lol

WelshMart

Been busy over the last few weeks and been doing more work on the car, none of it really picture worthy though.

Brake lines have been routed and bled so I now have a working brake system, I also decided to attach the rear half of the prop, only ting now is its so tempting to take it for a drive. I've rolled in backwards and forwards on the driveway and all seems fine, but damn its loud without any exhaust after the manifold.

I've also made an aluminium centre consol for my gauges and switches, wired in the majority of the said gauges and switches, and intsalled the dash need to make the binnacle work now though and need and 87 plug.

Moving house next week so probably not gonna be able to do anything else on the car until late Nov early Dec, but it feels like its getting close to done

left on the list

build exhaust
fit roll cage
run fuel lines
sort out some electrics lights wipers etc
run permanent fuel lines
paint it up nice

some pictures

fitment

lights fitted and bumper, dont like the way its been cut by the previous owner

oh and its too high!!!
